Celebrate Mother Nature & Your Mamma!
The invigorating spirit of Spring makes us appreciate the beauty of both mother nature and mother nurture. We celebrate Mother Nature for bringing us blooming flowers, crisp new air, and the rejuvenating warm weather. All these beautiful elements of nature make us forget about cold winter days and embrace this reawakening of life.
As avid lovers of travel, we recommend visiting Cinque Terre (the five lands) at this time of year. These small coastal towns nestled in the mountains really showcase the beauty of nature as they are bursting with beautiful beaches, salty air, quaint little shops, hiking trails, and some of the best seafood in the world.
In this time of revival, we commemorate our own mothers as well, giving thanks to those who gave us life and helped us grow. And let’s face it, nobody praises Mammas more than the Italians. In Italy, mothers are the heart and soul of the family structure. Festa della Mamma (Mother’s Day), is celebrated on the second Sunday in May to show mothers and maternity figures that they are appreciated for all they do and cherished by the family.
Similar to how we celebrate Mother’s Day in the United States, on Festa della Mamma families come together to show appreciation for the woman who made it all possible. On this special holiday, Mamma is meant to be pampered. She is not allowed to cook or do housework; instead, Mamma is meant to relax and enjoy spending time with her family, who showers her with gifts ranging from fresh flowers, handmade cards, and school children often write a special poem.
Fun Fact – Italian phone companies say that on this day they receive the highest volume of phone calls, due to the fact that children who cannot make it home will call Mamma and express their gratitude for all that she does.
This holiday is right around the corner and whether you celebrate with your Mom, Grandmother, Stepmother or any other important Mamma in your life, remember to take a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature and the significant impact that your mother-figure has had on your life.
