A day symbolized by the bright mimosa flower, La festa della donna or Women’s Day is a national Italian holiday. This holiday take place each year on March 8th (8 marzo) and celebrates the political, social, and economic conquests of women the world over. La festa della donna was first established in Italy in 1922 and is still widely celebrated today.

In Italy, La festa della donna is typically celebrated by men giving bouquets of mimosas to the special women in their lives. The mimosa was chosen to symbolize the holiday in 1946 by a group of Italian feminists, marking the official first holiday after World War II. The mimosa was especially chosen for its eye-catching hue and fragrant scent.

As of late, National Women’s Day has become a day for women to celebrate their female friendships and many restaurants and discotheques offer special events throughout the country on this holiday.

Here at AP Events, we celebrate the power of women business owners every day. Rossella Rago, Maryla Colandrea, Valeria Carrano, and Jennifer Galletti are four Italian-American women who have joined forces to teach travelers how to experience Italy through beauty and passion. Rossella specializes in culinary tours; Maryla plans Italy weddings and special events; Valeria organizes fun boat tours; and Jennifer rents out beautiful Italian villas. These strong and sophisticated female business owners have set out to entice the world and invite others to experience the beauty of Italy not as a tourist, but as a local. They like to call themselves the “Prima Donnas.”
